This is our second year of offering these adorable Prom Mini sessions for our clients! We have so much fun seeing everyone dressed to the 9’s and so excited for one of the best nights of their lives!
Whether you choose a professional photographer or it’s your mom that’s snapping, here are some tips to capture stellar prom portraits!

1. See a professional.
Prom is one of the most unforgettable nights of your life -you’ve spent a fortune on your dress, your shoes, your jewelry, the limo, dinner, flowers and all the little extras; don’t skimp on your hair and makeup! Seek out a professional hair and makeup artist to make you look and feel like a million bucks! Plus you get to sit back and relax on prom day while you get pampered!
2. Have fun!
Prom is supposed to be – more than anything else – fun! Make your portraits reflect that joy. Smile, be goofy, and have the time of your life. That’s when the best pictures happen – when you least expect it.
3. Get a little closer!
Even if your date is a friend, or you’re going with a group of girls – get close in your pictures. Too much space between subjects in a photograph is awkward and breaks up the flow of the image. If you don’t want to get all snuggly, connect by standing on either side of a column and peeking around at each other, or simply hold hands at a distance.
For big groups, try a silly group hug!
4. Show your style!
Make yours original. If you are going full on prom theme, try to find a background or location that accents that theme, even if it’s just a color or a mood. Don’t be afraid to try something different from everyone else!
5. Don’t forget the details!
You’ve spent so many months planning for this! Don’t forget to capture all the details of your big day! The shoes, corsage, a special necklace – get it all!
6. Stick to the basics!
Pick full open shade instead of speckled lighting. An open doorway, a porch, under a full shady tree, next to a building that provides shade. Soft shaded light is much better than full on sunshine unless its right at sunset – then go for it!
The later, the better – try to schedule your photos as late as possible before you leave for dinner. The hours of 10-2 are probably the worst as the sun will be right overhead and cause ugly shadows under everyone’s eyes. If you absolutely must choose a time during the middle of the day, stick to the shade tip above!
